Johan Ekkel is a Dutch painter of male nudes with a classical approach to the representation of the male body..
After an early retirement, he went back to his true love, painting naked men.
A graduate of the Royal Academy of Art and Design in Den Bosch in the Netherlands, Johan Ekkel has worked as an illustrator for advertising agencies and book and magazine publishers for well over 20 years |
Ekkel's almost painterly quality, mixed with a fantasised reality, yields images that are provoking and emotional.

Artist Statement: " Recently I have concentrated on my old love, drawings. One reason is that the material is so simple - a pencil, a virgin sheet of white paper, and the subject of the male nude. I also had the feeling that drawing is often better for more erotic scenes of man to man affection. I was inspired by Japanese drawings where the phallus is a dominant part of the drawing in combination with two people expressing their passion and tenderness for each other. To draw that moment in a good "artistic" way was not so easy, but I am happy now to present the first series of the drawings that have kept me busy for the the last few months and have inspired me. More will follow in the near future." Johan Ekkel
